Terms of Service

The boring-but-important rules for using our platform. Last updated: June 2026.

1. What This Is

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the #hackthekitty hackathon platform operated by coding.kitty("we", "us", "our"). By using this platform, you agree to these Terms, our Privacy Policy, and our Data Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use the platform. Simple as that.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to use this platform. If you're under 18, you should have a parent or guardian who's cool with you participating. We reserve the right to ask for verification if needed.

3. Your Account

  • You sign in via Discord OAuth. We don't store your Discord password.
  • You're responsible for keeping your Discord account secure.
  • Don't share access to your hackathon account with others.
  • Let us know immediately if you suspect unauthorised access.
  • We can suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

4. Hackathon Participation

Full hackathon rules will be published soon. In summary:

  • All submissions must be original work created during the hackathon period.
  • You retain full ownership of your code and intellectual property.
  • By submitting, you grant us a non-exclusive licence to showcase your project on our platform and social media for up to three years.
  • Be respectful to other participants, judges, and organisers.
  • No plagiarism, cheating, or using pre-built projects.
  • Teams are limited to a maximum of 2 members.

5. Acceptable Use

Don't use this platform to:

  • Harass, bully, or discriminate against anyone.
  • Submit malicious code, spam, or harmful content.
  • Attempt to hack, exploit, or disrupt the platform.
  • Impersonate others or misrepresent your identity.
  • Scrape, crawl, or bulk-download data from the platform.
  • Use automated tools to create accounts or submit entries.
  • Violate any applicable laws or regulations.

6. Content & Intellectual Property

You own what you build. We don't claim ownership of your hackathon projects. However, any content you post on the platform (comments, ideas, team finder posts, descriptions) should be yours to share. Don't post copyrighted material that isn't yours. Content you post publicly (ideas board, team finder) is visible to other logged-in participants.

7. Data Collection & Analytics

We collect data to run the hackathon and improve the platform. Here's the short version:

  • We use PostHog (EU-hosted) for analytics and session replay.
  • We collect session metadata (IP, location, browser) via Cloudflare for security.
  • We store your registration, survey, and submission data in Cloudflare D1.
  • You can opt out of non-essential analytics via the cookie banner.
  • We respect the Do Not Track browser setting.

For the full breakdown of every piece of data we collect, see our Data Policy. For how we handle and protect that data, see our Privacy Policy.

8. Third-Party Services

Our platform relies on the following third-party services:

  • Discord: Authentication and community platform.
  • Cloudflare: Hosting, database, file storage, and bot protection.
  • PostHog: Product analytics and session replay (EU-hosted).

We do not use advertising trackers, Google Analytics, or Facebook Pixel.

9. Disclaimers

This platform is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. We do our best to keep things running smoothly, but we can't guarantee 100% uptime or that everything will work perfectly all the time. We're a small team doing our best.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, coding.kitty and its organisers shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of this platform. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us (which is probably £0, since this is free).

11. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes shall be resolved individually. You agree not to bring or participate in any class, consolidated, or representative action. See the full Hackathon Rules (coming soon) for the detailed disputes process.

12. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. If we make significant changes, we'll let you know through the platform or via email. Continued use after changes means you accept the new Terms. The "last updated" date at the top tells you when these were last revised.
